Fundraising events can get a little stale when the same old games are played. Sure, trivia and bingo can be fun, but after a while people will want something different and could stop showing up. Getting creative with your fundraiser could make the difference between a successful and a poor fundraiser night. Raising money for charity is your goal and getting a little wacky can be a good idea. A couple of out of the box ideas for a fundraiser can be hosting cockroach and mouse races. These critters can give some people goosebumps, but they make pretty fun fundraisers, raising huge amounts of money for charities. For example, a cockroach race night in Britain with an attendance of 90 people raised more than $2,000.
What are cockroach and mouse races?
Both cockroach and mouse races require a track where the critters can freely race to the finish. These can either resemble horse racing tracks or be more like an obstacle course. It’s up to you and the venue in which you host your fundraiser. Some people build really elaborate tracks, but others choose to keep it simple. Other variations of the game include mouse roulette, where people pay for a playing card and then spread the deck across the table. The first card that the mouse touches, is the winning one. In cockroach racing, the cockroaches are let out in the middle of a ring, and the first one to reach the edges, wins.
What do I need?
Usually people bring their own trained pets to these kind of events, but for the fun of the fundraiser, you should talk to local cockroach farms or mouse breeders to lend you their animals. Be sure that they are treated fairly and returned to their rightful owners. Find an appropriate venue for this kind of event and make sure you have all the right equipment. Some volunteers can help you build a racetrack using string, chalk or duct tape. Make sure to have an announcer so he or she can give some extra flavor to the race. The announcer can make witty jokes and talk about the goal of your fundraiser. Depending on how many people you’ll have, set the cost of admission to the race. For example, people can “buy” a cockroach or mouse for $5 and enter it in the race, you decide on the rules!
